How to get a contractor's license in MD?

Importance of a License

If you are serious about doing business in MaryLand, you must be a licensed contractor. A contractor’s license is the only way to protect people from wrong information and frauds. Clients will search for your name in the licensed contractor’s directory before they choose to hire you.

I often receive emails about how to get a contractor’s license in MD. It is easy to get a contractor’s license if you can follow a step-by-step approach. MHIC offers licenses in different categories. To apply for a contractor’s license, you must have 2-year experience in the home improvement or real estate development industry. You’ll be required to pass a real estate exam from MaryLand commission. I would like to break the process in 5 easy steps for you.

Exam Process:

You’ll need to pass the official exams from PSI Inc. You must register yourself to appear for the exams. The examination fee is about $325. You’ll have to pay the fee each time an exam takes place. Contact the PSI Exams online. Required information will be available in the “candidate information bulletin”. Use that information for exam preparation and licensing issues.

Examination Preparation:

The exam will test your skills based on legal expertise, industry knowledge, and past projects. Many local colleges offer MHIC courses. You can enroll in any of them to get a basic understanding.

Application Requirements:

To receive a license, you’ll need to submit an application. Before you submit the form, make sure that these requirements are fulfilled:

You have 2-year experience in the relevant niche.
You have registered your trade name.
You can send proof of current $50,000 liability.
You must attach credit report with the application.

Application Process:

Application approval process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month. Once your application has been reviewed, your registered name will appear in the Commission’s public database on the Internet. It will take about 10-15 days before the paperwork is delivered to you.

Paper License:

If you have passed the exam and your application has been approved, you’ll receive a paper license confirming your certification.

MaryLand Commission also hosts monthly workshops to guide you more about the registration process. In the case of legal complexities or conviction, you must provide copies of conviction record along with a character certificate.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Best Regards,
Shaun!
